How is drinking alcohol with the sleeve?

I really wish I was one of those people who could take or leave drinking, but I do enjoy my cocktail once in a while.  I know that with the gastric bypass drinking can effect you quickly, but I am curious to hear from those who have the sleeve.  Is drinking alcohol different for you after getting the sleeve?

Appreciate your input!

  1. It doesn't feel different to me. As a band to VSG person, it is about the same as band. The problem is that if I want to drink at a dinner function, it just isn't happening. I used to be able to drink a glass of wine, and it would 'relax' my band. Alcohol doesn't relax my sleeve, it just takes up real-estate, so to speak. So don't plan to drink alcohol and eat within an hour of each other. I know drinking ANYTHING/eating is supposed to be off limits, but who hasn't had tiny sips of wine or cocktail between meals?!

  2. Hi Bonnie,
I had a band to sleeve done last year. Had band out in May and sleeve in August. I love the sleeve. I have lost 45 pounds and only have 8-10 to go to goal. I did well with my band but only lost 70 pounds, could not get that last 30 off, but sleeve is awesome.
Ah hem, about the alcohol. I too like my cocktails and had a glass of wine at 2 months out. Did not kill me. :)
I do get buzzed a bit quicker so am a bit more careful of how fast or how much I drink.
Good luck with your sleeve and hope to see you post.

  3. I don't think it is the same with the band vs the sleeve. I didn't get drunk like with the band. With the sleeve, it absorbs faster - so on the hard liquor you have to watch it even if mixed in. I've drank wine - really doesn't do much, a little tipsy. But I had a margarita - like a small version at Gloria's (here in Austin) and they didn't skimp on the liquor - it hit me within 5 minutes and kind of had me drunk. I only drank like less than half. But by the time I walked over to this other place with friends - the drunkenness was gone. It lasted about 20 or so minutes. So it was like bam! its here and gone just as fast. Thats the only drink I had... I'm scary. Haha.

  4. I agree with Hollee that you really can't drink and eat. Alcohol is absorbed more quickly and you could be intoxicated on much less alcohol. The caution to limit alcohol after VSG is not just diet advice. I limit wine to one bottle per week and never more than 2 small glasses. I think the potential for addiction is REAL. I don't crave wine like I did with the Band so in that sense it's much easier to limit my consumption. The best advice is to avoid it completely post op forever or for several months. You have to really change after the sleeve or you will be right where you started.
