Why I don't track and a C25K Question

There have been quite a few posts lately about tracking and not tracking food.  Part of the reason I got the band is I wanted to lose weight without dieting.  I figured that as long as I didn't do any crazy sliders and focused on protein, the band would be enough.   However, I am 7 months into my journey and the band has not helped me lose as much weight as I hoped.  I am now up to 8.2 ccs and had my last fill (increase of .4 cc) by fluoro last week.  I mention that it was by fluoro because it was the first time where I didn't have to feel "responsible" to judge my fill by how I felt when I drank my water.  My surgeon could actually see the barium going down and told me when the fill was good.   I did have a little concern because I am typically tight in the morning and my test was first thing in the morning.  Unfortunately, my surgeon only does it first thing in the morning, so I didn't have a choice.  It has not given me the resriction that I had hoped for.

I know a lot of people say that they want to be able to eat everything, just in moderation.  I can eat everything, but more than moderation.  Don't get me wrong, I am definitely eating less than I did pre-band, but 1/2 to 1 cup of food - even solid protein - does not keep me full for 3 to 4 hours.  It is frustrating because the beginning part of my journey was so easy.  My surgery was smooth with no complications, my surgeon went in through my belly-button (aka no scars) and quick recovery.  I lost weight pretty steadily for a few months and then despite getting fills, my weight loss stalled.  I've only lost 10 lbs since September and that really hit home when I heard about some of the bloggers I met in Chicago are coming to New York on March 20th.   I really would love to make the 3 hour trip to New York to see them again and am hoping some of the other Baltimore BOOBS will go with me.  However, there is a little voice in my head saying, "Seriously?  You really want to have those women who you like and respect see that you haven't made much progress with your weight loss?"   But then my other voice says "Hey, these gals support you no matter what and they don't care if you are having a tough time of it.  Plus, last time you lost 10 lbs after meeting all your sister BOOBS so maybe this will give you the push you need."  Maybe the more important question here is.  "Does anybody else talk to themselves and have multiple conversations with different opinions?"  Anyway, regardless of my Sybil-like self talk, I definitely am hoping to make the trip.  Also excited about BOOB 2.0 in Chicago and hoping I can make that.

So I was really hanging my hat on this last fill to get the scale moving, but unless I have a serious delayed reaction, it's not going to happen.  I'm realizing that I need to do more to lose weight.  Some of you might remember that my husband and I gave our daughters a membership to our gym for Christmas.  Wednesday night is the first time we all went together.  (The girls and I have gone previously, but Dave was working nights so this was the first time we were all able to go).  It was a lot of fun.  And then Thursday night the girls and I went up to take a Zumba class.  (Dave working).  We're taking a break today, but will be going up tomorrow to get in some cardio.  Hubby and I have some personal training sessions from before that we haven't used and planning on scheduling a session soon.  Exercise has always been necessary in the past in order for me to lose weight so I guess it was naive of me to think having the band would be any different.

I'm hoping that exercise will get the scale moving because I really don't want to have to start tracking everything that goes in my mouth.  I know that works for some people, but tracking brings back bad memories and feelings of failure.  My pattern in the past is to do really well for a few days (maybe weeks if I was lucky) and then as soon as I slip up, I'd throw in that towel and eat whatever I wanted that day vowing to do better tomorrow...or Monday...or next week...you get the point.  If nothing is off limits then I don't have to feel guilty about eating anything and I won't go off on an eating frenzy because I overate.  Guilt and self-hate were my worst enemies when I tried to lose weight in the past.  I dieted my way up to my highest weight of 279 because the feeling of failure made me eat more.  I don't want to feel those out-of-control emotions ever again.

Question:  I am hoping eventually to get into running. I used to run when I was younger (and thinner) and really enjoyed it. I have a question about the C25K program. Is it something you download and is it just a voice telling you when to run and when to walk? I tried downloading one and it was terrible.  It was just this voice with no cool music.  I definitely need music to help me and would love some cool music that is timed for a walking and running program with the intent of getting you to run the entire time.

I track a little, mostly my protein, mostly in my head... I think to get this last 20 off I will need to be real careful. But I know the feelings you have. We are all built differently and some people are doing this as a hardcore diet and some (like me)are looking at it as a lifestyle change. You will get there!!!!!!

  2. I just had this conversation with my surgeon Bonnie. It is a lifestyle change and while it is great that we can eat pretty much what we want now and not GAIn weight -- we have to really watch it still to lose. That does suck. I do think part of it is being at the right restriction and from reading these blogs that is the most difficult part of this band. You probably need to wait a week or two then go back and get filled until you feel good about it. Tracking calories sucks but I did it when I was losing weight and it really did help me. I need to do it again as a matter of fact.
As far as C25K I did that for a while but didn't stick with it. I couldn't find one with music. Hope you do!

  3. Alright...pull up a chair we are going to have a chat.. I know you have followed my story.. I Oct.29th was my one year mark.. I did not have true (and I mean true restriction until Dec. 7th.. that is 14 months till restriction. and honestly despite all the crap in my life.. it really was the first time I felt like the band was doing what it was designed to do.. and if you can recall I was in STALLville.. I mean my weight went no where.. it took me forever to get to onederland, but after that dec. 7th fill the lbs, started to drop at the advertised rate of 2 pounds a week.. now to have full disclosure.. life got in the way of my band.. but.. the point is when you truly have restriction and I mean small amounts fill you pretty easily, then you are there.. so hang on sweetie stay doing what your doing and schedule that next fill when you are ready..

  4. I roughly track protein and calories. I track it specifically at work and sometimes fill in what I had for dinner the night before when I get in the next day. The rest of the time I try to eyeball it - somedays that's more successful than others. I don't want to have to track every little thing - but we'll see.

As for C25k. I downloaded an ap to my iphone and have only done it a couple of times and it was just a voice so I provided my own music - I did see where one of the buttons on the ap said something about music - but I haven't explored it yet. I'll definitely let you know if I learn something interesting.

  6. Bonnie keep up the hard work. Going to the gym is hard but it does get easier. I try to look at it as look at what I achieved today. I push myself to finish and then when I am done I think man I am proud. I am really looking forward to NYC. I think it will be good for all of us!

  7. I have an iPod touch, the app I purchased for c25k allows my music to run in the background and just overlays the instructors voice as needed. I also have the Nike+ app which does the same thing.

  8. Girl, I weigh what I weighed last July and I'm still going to the brunch. Just don't get between me and the guac, and everything's good. ;)

  9. No idea on the C25k...but there are multiple programs you can google like how to train for a 5k, 10k or 1/2 or full marathon and those would certainly make you into a runner. I was NEVER a runner....I walked until I could run a little and then did just a little more each day. Good luck. And yes dear - GO - no one will judge you for what you have or haven't lost in weight - they love you regardless.

  10. Ok - how in the world can we judge you?? Our battle with weight is what brought us together (at first at least).
I agree with Barb (she is a wise one) that it can take a long time to get restriction, but when you do it gets much easier. I was much more hard core the 5-6 months or so it took me to get good restriction because I knew if I wasn't would lose momentum.
Maybe we need to have lunch soon to plan NYC and give each other a kick in the ass. Love ya!

  11. I completely know what you mean. What I realized (for me) is that I still have to diet, but the band makes it doable for me. No more failure. I still have to track and to exercise and not eat lots of chocolate all the time, but the band makes it easier. As for motivation, that's what I feel we are all here for each other. :)

  12. Check out runsource.net. It looks like they have a few different podcasts that have music.

  13. I found a C2K app on my phone so I listen to my iPod and have the phone/timer tell me when to run and when to walk. It is working well for me. I like it. Tomorrow is day 3 of week 1.

As for your slow weight loss. Can I ask how much you have lost? I have lost 60lbs since May 2010. I feel the EXACT same as you. Will I go to BOOBS 2.0 and look exactly the same or maybe a couple lbs lighter? I hate tracking all my food because I, too, didn't want the band to be a diet but it seems that we will have to "diet" for awhile until we retrain our little brains to make better food choices and let the band do it's job. I would love to talk to you in more detail. I think we may be in a similar situation and I am desperately looking for as much help, guidance and support as I can get. Let me know if you are interested. We can chat via email or FB.

  14. Try this one:
    Go here:
    http://www.ullreys.com/robert/Podcasts/page4/files/category-7.html
Right-click on "Podcast" and "save as" then just download to whichever file you want to save it under. Download the first week then take a listen and see what you think.

This might not be the right link, but I KNOW I've seen and downloaded a techno version and a rocknroll version before. They play that type of music and it just changes tempo when you switch from jog to walk and visa versa.

  15. I agree with everyone here! There is no total plan that works for everyone! But I do understand having the feelings you do. I think you will find we all have these feelings of frustration from time to time. But you'll figure it out! I hope to meet you in Chicago in Septemember!

  16. I don't like the idea of logging food, either. But it's really helped me! I was stalling slightly and when I started logging and workout out simultaneously, my weight loss has slowly started up again.

And no one will judge you, we all have our plateaus! If you were another blogger you would be giving yourself words of encouragement right about now, so try and internalize the good thoughts and don't be hard on yourself, sweetie! :)

  17. No one will judge you. Think of it this way - you're DOWN 10 pounds through the holiday season! Would you have been able to do that last year? You're doing awesome and no one will tell you otherwise, I'm sure.

  18. Hi...I don't have much to add to the words above...weight loss is so individual.

But think buying gym memberships for the girls so you can go as a family is soooooooo great. I think a lot of weightloss is about permanent lifestyle changes. I think the family gym concept is a fantastic idea for the whole family.

  19. Everyone's offered up good advice so I just want to lend support. If you have an Iphone or Itouch, you can download the c25k program that will play over your own playlist. If you have an older Ipad (like me), there are a lot of diff programs you can try. I downloaded 5k101 from itunes (free) and it has music (albeit techno music) and a voice that tells you when to run/walk. Good luck with the working out! And don't be afraid to ask for another fill!

  20. All the previous posters have said it so well already but I will say it again. You are on your own schedule and not on anyone elses. Fills are such a hard thing to find the perfect number and so many of us feel like we are not making it work. I hope you have fun at BOOBS and I am going to look at the C25K think because it sounds great.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, you already know what I think...no four letter words...and the only things I weigh are solid protein and myself! The fill is the key and I was just plain lucky that I had a perfect fill for 10 months. Are you judging me because I gained 15 pounds back >-( ? I think not! Now stop talking sillyness! ...and you'd better be in Chicago GF!

  22. C25K: I just used a cheap watch with a stop watch on it. In fact, you can have it, because my body rejects running.

Don't feel bad. Don't. We are all so so much alike. It may SEEM like some are doing better than others, but everyone struggles, even those who are 2 years out. If you are in NYC I will feel like I've died and gone to heaven!

  23. The Skinny Water is so awesome, it doesn't have an aftertaste and has some vitamins in it. Even better! :)

I started the C25K program an enjoyed it. I have an app on my iphone that tells me when to run and when to walk and it also let me play my playlists with it. If you have an iphone or ipod, that is definitely the way to go.

Boobs. I am thinking of going, it's on my daughter's birthday (unless they change the date) so I am going to have to do some sweet talking. I hope you go too!

  24. I'm in maintenance so I track because my concentration right now is on making healthier choices. When I was losing I didn't track much, just ate mostly proteins. Now, I am trying to assure I am getting fruit & veggies which I was severly lacking during my weightloss phase. Maintenance is all about awareness so tracking on my phone gives me a snapshot of my previous week vs. what Mr.scale is showing. New York? Hmmmm I wonder if I can work that out, I have always want to go but haven't yet ;-)

  25. Not being banded, I am in the "pre band *d-i-e-t* stage. I hate it and it sucks.. However, tracking everything does keep me somewhat accountable..

And I do support you my Friend - always and no matter what! So whether we meet in Chicago or at a football game (hehehe) you'll get nothing but a HUGE (((hugggg)))) from me!

  26. What are we going to do about it? SHIT!!! :)
I think you moving here is a PERFECT idea. I'd move to you, but I have no idea where you are. lol!!
Thank you for all of the support!
Oh, and I love this blog background. It's so fun. :)

  27. The only thing I watch is calories and protein...I don't pay attention to carbs or fat. For me, those don't seem to matter. If I eat less and burn more, I lose. At least so far. But, I do like to write my stuff down. For now. I don't think of it as part of a diet so much as I think of it as part of journaling this new lifestyle until I really get the hang of it all.

I haven't lost very much since October...It is SO hard to watch things slow down when it was going to fast in the beginning! I feel your pain. But, I really think you are going to get past this. I've read about it so many times...and it's so helpful to know that others are going through it too! :)

  28. Just wanted to pop in and say hi! You and I have struggled together and I feel the same way you do about tracking. I'm trying to avoid it because it seems to end up doing more harm than good, but I am trying to be very conscious of my protein.

I'm jealous of the NY get-together and really think you should go. No judgments but some really great inspiration can be found there and why deprive yourself of that?

As for C25k- I'll echo the praises of the app that a few have mentioned. I use it with my iPhone and it runs over whatever music I have selected from my iPod.

Hang in there- you're not alone. :)

  29. Hi Bonnie,

Just wanted to check in with you about the March 20 NYC brunch. Trying to get a final headcount so I can make a reservation at Dos Caminos. Let me know if you can join us, would be GREAT to see you!

  30. Please do not stay away from NY just because you haven't lost 'fast enough'!!
Go read my blog--I'm probably one of the slowest losers out there-- sticking with it is the key,
Hope to meet you in nyc!

  31. You have to come to NY Bonnie! it would be so fun to meet you! Everyone's journey is different and I know that you can do it!! on the C25k program, I downloaded an app to my iphone...you can also download music to it..so the music plays and then a little chime comes on telling me when to walk or run..it is great!!

btw, if you come to NY, which I really hope you do, I might have some clothes for you if you are interested..

  32. I'm coming up to the 1 year post surgery date. I've lost 27lbs. I've felt frustrated and angry. I've felt like giving in. So while it' hasn't been a huge loss it's a loss and I haven't left "one-derland" since entering it. But the 190's won't go away!!

As for the C25K, I tried it. I really wanted to like it. But I just really don't like running. So I stick to the things I like to do, so I keep doing it. Good luck finding the right rhythm!
